    Win + Question

I had a nice win a few days ago: A track placement for an up-and-coming Nigerian singer and it features quite a huge Nigerian rapper on it too (good for the catalogue). Not only that, I got paid my full rate for the production and kept 50% of my publishing. So good deal all round really! 🏆 When it came to the credit, on Spotify for instance it says produced by myself and the artist manager's name. When I questioned this, the manager said that he came up with the idea/genre for the production and... See more

Aug '23Fire song! I have never heard of this unless previously agreed as a co-production.

    2. Aaron Ferrucci

Sep '23@Philip Davidson Agree here. It doesn't warrant a co-prod managers are expected to give feedback but rarely take credit. As long as its not eating into your fee structure or publishing then all is well imo

Sep '23Realized I didn't comment on this. Congrats Kensaye! I dig the song :) Managers can do that sometimes as an 'executive producer' credit. No biggie, as long as your royalty stuff is all set up correct then you're good to go.

Aug '23 (edited)In hiphop this is common when you’re working with an A&R and but not a manager. I haven’t experienced this working in afrobeats but then again I am working with an exec who’s being crediting on everything but he’s very much involved. Also, to Phil’s point, if he and the artist made that business arrangement then that’s what it is. But, again congrats.🇳🇬🍾

Aug '23Way to go man!!! Sounds so dope! I havnt really heard of a manager being credited as producer but I think Phillip nailed it with "long as the bizz is all good"

    4. Kensaye Russell
      Kensaye Russell

Sep '23@Philip Davidson Yes, a contract signed by both myself and the artist. so all good. Yeah I think he just considers his feedback on the production to be co-production. But as I said, this is the second time this has happened for me. It's kind of strange,

Aug '23Congrats man! Great song.Co-prod sounds a bit weird. Taking a look at the credits to the other songs it seems that the only other he has prod on is the other record with features on. Guess he sorted that out so he thinks he’s entitled to prod credit. I wouldn’t worry about it too much if the bizz is all good. Have you got pub splits in writing?

    Repeat client already - dang

Just figured I'd share a win here to encourage. Pretty stoked to have a client I only started with probably 2 weeks ago for three songs that is so happy she's already wanting to have a convo about signing for three more songs so when we track vocals we can also do some writing too. She wasn't super happy with her prior producer and she's already loving what I'm sending her and these songs aren't even done. I think the moral of the story is - do great work. Another $7500 deal. I'm realizing that if I... See more

Jul '23@Raoul MacCamley So I'm coming at it from a bit of a different place because I have a following of almost 200k on YouTube so most of my interactions require no rapport building because they already know they want me to work with them. BUT... a lot of it is confidence and leading the conversation - I am using the framework that Dan has in this course here on the calls.Be a solution for them - beyond that I also find that positioning not as just a "service provider" but also a tastemaker is very h... Jul '23@John Caviness I didn't really have any objections to the money side.I think when you build rapport before the call even happens - you dont have as any objections. So I have a following of close to 200k on YouTube which undeniably helps. First off - I can't take everyone who comes in - I say "no" to most of the people who want me to produce them because I am just being super selective - so that alone means if I'm getting on a call then they already know that they were almost "selected by me" inst... Jul '23@Nathan Larsen Thanks for taking the time to really break all of this down! You've built an impeccable brand and it makes sense that artists see the value in working with you. It's really inspiring to see how you've positioned yourself and how that translates to working with premium clients. This idea is huge:"I'm getting on a call then they already know that they were almost "selected by me" instead of them choosing me which changes the entire conversation."Really appreciate the insight here man, thanks for the words of wisdom!

    Highest paying client!

A few days ago I landed my highest paying client yet! $750 for a full track! I tried out the SSF call framework with them, which I didn't do amazing on... first time! But they still wanted to work together and I think that it is a great fit! Also recently finished a rough draft for a remix that I'm doing for a band and they loved it! It isn't a paid project but they have a small record label which the remix will be released on. I think it will give me some great opportunities to secure more royalties because they are super focussed on that!

    A Couple (small) Wins

I set a timeline with my artist to finish a song I'm really excited about! It has been a long and very emotional process. I got so discouraged for a while because he was reluctant to set any goals or agree on a schedule. But I put my fears, insecurities and excuses aside, followed up again, and now things are moving in the right direction. I have been consistent with my AM/PM formulas and started working through the "Artist's Way," which has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone and already... See more

Jul '23@Betty Michaels tbh I don't write that much! nowhere near the three pages she stipulates. I've got a big notebook and tiny writing—I'd be there all morning! I just write until I feel like I've gained clarity on something or processed something. Most days half a page to a page, some days just a few lines. What do you find hard about it, just the quantity?

OK so I'm a writer and I tend to be a bit long winded with things, but bare with me. I've been with Dark Label for a while now and I never really succeeded due to me having 101 side hustles but I always saw the potential. When I started I did very little outreach due to me deciding to work on my portfolio first. I didn't want wait too long, but I didn't feel my portfolio met m... See more

    First Sales Call

Landed my first sales call via IG this morning; it's scheduled for tomorrow. Ultimately, I landed the call because the artist seems to have a slow moving trajectory for their next single release. So I asked what's holding them back from moving forward with more records...which was money. That gave me something to go forward with and ask if they'd be open to hop on a call with me to talk about what they expect from a music producer. It's been a bit of a slow road for me to get on the outreach trai... See more

    #wins

#wins Just locked in a new client. I did not think they would go for it. They were excited to work. The only objection they had was the price. But I stuck to my price and explained why I charge what I do. They paid the first invoice and scheduled out our pre-production call. I am feeling more and more confident with sales calls and working through objections.

    PROJECT DONE😌‼️🌱

What’s up yall just wanted to share that I finally finished an EP with a friend that we started before I joined Dark Label (kinda like a Eric B & Rakim situation) which took sixth months to create😵‍💫lol but I’m very proud of it and will use this as leverage to attract my ideal clients. Here’s the fan favorite off the project so far https://open.spotify.com/track/4XGZwbEGkn6kFescJgwvl8?si=J7j_feg5QgWlyDLbLNomDQ We created content around it too on youtube and IG. This took up the majority of my h... See more

    #wins

#wins just locked in a new client. Doing post production and a mix and master. Never done post-production for a client before so I am excited to do that for the first time. If all goes well he has other songs he wants me to fully produce. So potential for more work. A big selling point was that I'll be way faster then his other engineer who works at a label. He said his other engineer takes forever because this artist is not a priority. So I was able to use that on the sales call.

Jun '23Right on Jesse! Important point ya made here. Even though the other engineer is label affiliated, there’s still a gap that needs to be filled in the artist’s process that you can fill.

    It's just the beginning

Been reaching out to just a couple of potential clients and received two deposits yesterday in just a couple of weeks of light outreach. Honestly, I thank the morning routine. As cheesy as it sounds even my wife has noticed a difference in me. All that being said here's a direct quote for anybody still trying to reconcile "sales" "Just wanted to say how thankful I am to you reaching out and how excited I am about this!! You’ve been awesome so far and it’s literally just the beginning" It's so easy ... See more

    First sales call!

My first proof session from doing outreach turned into a sales call. I was pretty excited and nervous about it but I just casually followed the framework and tried my best to figure out exactly what the artist really needed. The end result is my first sales call being a WIN, both of us are excited for the song and I’m getting paid a higher rate that feels right for the project. Very grateful for this group!

Just landed my first full rate client! Thank you Dark Label team for the amazing framework you've laid out for us. Using the intake form, SSF, Follow up script, and all of the mindset coaching added up to the artist really seeing the value, and feeling a sense of professionalism. Keeping the focus on the artist and their obstacles, my solutions/vision, and genuinely caring for them and their goals really helped disarm some fear they had from working with previous producers, and built a lot of tr... First 3 proof sessions

I started doing outreach just over 3 weeks ago and have managed to connect with a bunch of cool artists and land 3 proof sessions so far! I'm actually finding it really enjoyable just talking to people in the music world. I've never really sent voice messages for anything haha but I feel like they are really fun when meeting new people and are far more engaging for both the artist and myself. Grateful for everyone in this group as seeing all the posts really helps motivate me, so cheers!

    Win Part 2!

Following up on the other days win, I sent over a demo for a remix to the artist and they liked it and they even wanted to do 2 remixes! I offered $600 for both and they were down! This is the first money that I have made from online producing so definitely a huge step since starting Dark Label! Thanks for all the advice, help, and encouragement from this community!
